Counterweights

While insulating around a window I ran across these weights attached to cables threaded through the window frame.
Old timey for sure.
We assume they are counterweights.
As much as we didn't want to cut them out we had to.
I need to get the insulation in.
There were four of them on this window. Two above and two below.
Quite heavy.

  1. Our first home years ago had these!! When we replaced the windows, of course they came out, but I saved the weights - haven't used them for anything - but great momentos. So enjoying seeing your progress - I can so relate!!

  2. That's what they are! Our huge old Victorian had windows operated on this system. Very handy and worked well back in the day. However many of ours were destroyed by the time we had the house, making the windows impossible to keep open without props!

  4. I still have 2 of those style windows in this house, and several in apartment and wash haouse and storage building, plus a stack of weights in the basement. Anyone need a stack of weights??? I wish they had not replaced the rest of the windows in the house with cheap aluminum windows. Not only are they flimsy but they did not seal around them and makes it hard to keep house warm or cool as necessary.
